9TH GRADE SPOTLIGHT

MAA has been given the opportunity to take the entire 9th grade on a field trip to see a matinee at the theater 59E59. In 9th grade ELA, students have been studying science fiction and doomsday stories, and this play—The Immortal Jellyfish Girl— is set in a dystopian future. This is a special showing of the post-apocalyptic puppet show, The Immortal Jellyfish Girl.

10TH GRADE "BLACK OUT" POETRY

 10th Grade students experimented with Black Out Poetry at the end of their Poetry unit. Black Out Poetry (or Erasure)  is a form is a creative form of poetry created by "blacking out" words from an existing text and framing the result on the page as a poem. Art related to the theme of the blackout poem is illustrated in the background to hide away unused words.

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION

The AP English Language and Composition course focuses on the development and revision of evidence-based analytic and argumentative writing, the rhetorical analysis of nonfiction texts, and the decisions writers make as they compose and revise. Students evaluate, synthesize, and cite research to support their arguments. Additionally, they read and analyze rhetorical elements and their effects in nonfiction texts—including images as forms of text— from a range of disciplines and historical periods. 12TH GRADE / AP ENGLISH LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION

The AP English Literature and Composition course focuses on reading, analyzing, and writing about imaginative literature (fiction, poetry, drama) from various periods. Students engage in close reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature to deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure. As they read, students consider a work’s structure, style, and themes, as well as its use of figurative language, imagery, and symbolism. Writing assignments include expository, analytical, and argumentative essays that require students to analyze and interpret literary works. College Course Equivalent The AP English Literature and Composition course aligns to an introductory college-level literature and writing curriculum. Course & Exam Description / Curriculum
